UPDATE:  August 18, 2014

In order to keep the legal fight against this going, we must raise $80,000 by the end of October.

We need every practitioner in Ontario to realizes that chipping in $200 each now is a far wiser action then ending up fighting this alone or having to close up your practice after Oct 1st.

So far, the Minister has not responded to our lawyer’s request that he postpone the proclamation of the amendments on Oct 1st. So, please everyone…ACT NOW… donate your share to keep us all free.

  1. There will come a time in the not so distant future, when EVERYONE will be made aware of the dangers of GMO foods, big pharma, and the control of these corporations who in turn, control the medical communities…
And the great need for each of us to take responsibility for our emotional, mental, spiritual and physical care.
All this ridiculous legislation will do ( as I stated in my emails to both the premier and the minister of LTC) is force alternative practitioners to go underground, and that in turn, will lead to less revenue for the government.
My family doc is well aware that if it were not for the fact I need a script for a compound that (because of the government’s policies) can only be made a pharmacist, she would never see me. As it is, she sees me once a year, completely disagrees with my alternative approach…. but when she brings it up for discussion, is reminded that it was the medical “professionals”, her colleges who are responsible for several medical mishaps that could have been prevented.
We simply need to stand together and stay strong. We are the light:)

    1. A Fraser Institute study in 2006 showed that Canadians are losing trust in the medical establishment and over 67% of people believed in alternative and holistic approaches. This is why suddenly psychologists have developed a huge interest in what they always called ‘quackery’ until the public started to realize that endless ‘theories’ and no resolution was the quackery. Now they are manufacturing all sorts of ‘new professions’ to replace tried and true treatments…spiritual psychotherapy, holistic psychology, hypno-psychotherapy.

These lobby groups have very deep pockets and obviously the ear of the government. To get this resolved so that we can practice as has been passed down for generations, we must pool together our contributions to fund the legal assistance. Please, contribute generously at http://www.stoppsychothrapytakeover.ca so that these lobby groups can be prevented from diluting down real healing therapies, until there are no alternatives but drugs and long talk-therapy.

I hope that practitioners right across Canada have not become complacent. I hope that everyone realizes that being forced to become a psychotherapist just to be able to make a living is accepting coercion and manipulation.

  2. Which govt is this going thru/ federal or Provincial is there a petition we can sign. I find nothing on the web.

    1. Hi Jessy,
this is an Ontario (provincial) government legislation. We are in the process of pulling together an on-line petition. We’ll announce the online petition on the site when we get it finalized. We post all information on this site as we get it. Please read through the website to learn of the many ways you can help. Thank you for circulating this far and wide.

    2. Ontario – Provincial government. Two petitions are found linked on the home link at the top of this page. You can see two links to “sign the petition” for two different petitions there. 🙂

    3. Jessy,
please go to the homepage and you will see links to two petitions. We are so encouraged as in a very short time we have received well over 3,000 signatures.

  3. My understanding is that the hypnotists union settled this back in 2007-9. It was agreed that as long as hypnotists are not calling themselves hypnotherapists, and making it clear to their clients that it is self-hypnosis for self-help and not therapy, that it is perfectly legal to practice, and that the College of Psychotherapists have no authority over what we do. I confirmed with the union today that this agreement still stands. If this is incorrect information, please clarify for me how or why this is the case. I have a very busy hypnosis practice, and I train new hypnotists to build their practices. So I am extremely concerned about what is happening. I think it is a mistake to stir the pot with the College of Psychotherapists unless it is necessary. If it is necessary, please explain. I would really appreciate a response. If this is necessary, I am happy to offer the support needed. Thank you.

    1. Hello Robbie,

The best thing to do is read the legislative wording carefully. It is a Canadian legislation. Do you see anything in there that says the NGH has any sway over Ontario law? The NGH can say anything they want to to keep members, but unless it is written in law, it is not prudent to rely on it. Did the NGH say they would hire a lawyer for you when the College decides unilaterally that you are engaging in an ‘act of psychotherapy’?

Read the legislation and you will see that it refers to any verbal and non-verbal individual treatments for emotional, cognitive, behavioral, social functioning, thinking, reason and mental issues (all human reactions). Whether you claim the client is doing it to themselves or not you are providing the treatment and your treatment can be deemed to fit this definition since all definitions are subject to the whim of the College after it is proclaimed. You can teach someone to tap as in EFT and the client will do it for themselves, but you have still assessed and treated. Anyone who intervenes in an individual’s bumps and bruises of life is treating, even clergy.

Don’t you think there is something wrong when in a democracy, where we are supposed to have rights to choose our treatments and to provide a service if someone requests that service, that you have to rely on the statements of the NGH in hopes of protecting yourself from those who want to force you out? Why should Ontario practitioners ever have to tip-toe around, hoping not to be targeted? You are relying on backroom discussions and backroom deals NGH has suggested they had with the College, which incidentally has not even been proclaimed!

So the NGH’s union talked to someone at the non-yet-proclaimed College and made a deal with that unknown person to leave NGHers alone. That right there should sound an alarm for you. You are ultimately suggesting that you are basing your interpretation of the legislation on what the NGH has to say and on the whim of private discussions …that would seem a very dangerous thing to do.

In addition, the NGH, while simultaneously claiming that their members can call themselves hypnotists or hypnotherapists at will (and I have this in writing) has now told their members to call themselves motivational coaches by means of hypnosis to avoid being targeted by the College. So many members, apparently such as yourself, are engaging in a violation of College rules (once it’s proclaimed) presuming they are safe because they changed their title, all the while continuing to do exactly as they’ve always done. Engaging in verbal linguistics is not going to protect you from any lobby group seeking to put you out of business.

I did not see where they said to call yourself a self-hypnosis teacher in order to avoid the legislation. So you motivate a client to stop being anxious, to stop biting the nails or to stop binge-eating by convincing them to do self-hypnosis, but no one can argue that there is a cognitive, emotional, behavioral and mental component to any one of those issues. We all motivate clients one way or another.

Anybody who is fearful of stopping bad legislation that violates our constitutional rights to offer our services, that seeks to provide a monopoly to one lobby group and which interferes with our right to practice freely, needs to consider addressing the source of that fear (the legislation) rather than to continue presuming an american union is going to be there for them when the axe comes down.

There is no reason to have legislative wording that remotely suggests that the assessment and treatment of human disturbances is an act of psychotherapy. The assessment and treatment of human disturbances is an act of assessment and treatment. Psychotherapy is merely one of hundreds of ways of doing this act. Any legislation that seeks to violate another’s constitutional rights must be challenged.

  4. Having been trained and certified in foot, hand and auricular reflexology, acupressure, EFT, NLP, laughter yoga, and investing
hundreds of hours in several other wellness- related education courses and programs I know from experiences that Dr. Tim Hudson makes excellent sense. He speaks truth. Can’t you feel it ? In my view this sudden, barely researched “power grab” by psychotherapy is unnecessary, untimely, unfair, unjustified, even unhealthy, and unspiritual. I see it as an immature act and not helpful to the consumer.

    1. The licensed professionals behind this take over find it very necessary to orchestrate this since they are losing or have lost all ethical and moral authority to ‘treat’ people. Millions are seeing just what the medical/pharmaceutical cartel is about. The system they have designed on taxpayer money is one of illness creation.

Alternatives are about creating wellness and self-empowerment. Can’t have that…how would the pharmaceuticals make their billions and the authorities who build careers on the backs of people they’ve made ill through their prostitution of science possibly survive?

The current medical system has had a monopoly for many decades and now we have the most ill society ever, with studies showing that for the first time in recorded history, children will not live as long as their parents. Children today are drugged senseless by the tens of thousands at a time, just for the sin of being born and acting like children. The medical community happily drugging newborns with anti-anxiety drugs is testament to the evil that pervades the current system.

Of course they can’t have alternative practitioners around to show people that there is a way out of hell and into wellness and vibrancy! Of course they can’t have anyone showing parents that childhood is not a mental illness or that the food on the grocery store shelves is mostly chemical poison….
