As a threat to our ability to practice natural and alternative treatment looms, with permission we are posting this self-explanatory letter from a long-time alternative practitioner to all practitioners.  It eloquently explains what so many of us feel.

For those of you who know me well, you’ll also know that I am not given to over-exaggerated claims.  I’ve lived through too much of my own drama to get easily wrapped up in the drama of others.  So please believe me when I tell you that if you are a holistic practitioner in Ontario, or a member of the public who enjoys the benefits of holistic healing, your right to choose or practice these services is being slowly and deliberately removed by the Ontario Government.

In a move that would have made Machiavelli proud, the Psychology Act (2007) was amended in 2009 under a huge Omnibus Bill giving psychotherapists exclusive and unprecedented control over the definition and treatment (at their sole discretion) of all emotional disturbances of the human condition.  By this legislation alternative wellness specialists who deal with a client’s emotions are deemed to be psychotherapists by another name: and it may shock you to know that the interpretation of this legislation is so ambiguous that it can also include members of the clergy (without a Master’s Degree in Psychology) who administer grief counselling to a parishioner.  I personally find that offensive and more than a little scary.  And as you might suspect, the penalties for violation are severe – up to $25,000 for the first offence and more after that.
